Mahomet Township was created April 30, 1860 as one of the original 15 townships and called Middletown Township. In November 1861, T19N, R7E was detached from Middletown Township to form Scott Township The township name was changed to Mahomet Township in 1871. Mahomet is bounded on the west by Piatt County and the Sangamon River passes through nearly the center of the Township, making this one of the loveliest townships in the county. Lake of the Woods Park is located in Section 2.
The township contains the following cemeteries: Phillippe Cemetery (section 1), Riverside Cemetery (sections 10 & 15), Middletown Cemetery (section 15), and Bryant Cemetery (section 22).
Riverside Cemetery has plots available, but the rest are either full or have limited availability.
